The anatomy of a restoration
Locate: OTDR traces from both directions bracket the break; the crew correlates footage to the as-builts and finds the damage. Stabilize: if the cable is severed, an emergency splice case restores the highest-priority strands within hours. Repair: damaged cable is replaced section for section, spliced permanently, retested strand by strand, and the documentation updated — because a restoration that isn't documented is the seed of the next outage. Dig-ins, storms, and hard failures
Third-party dig-ins are the most common killer — an excavator through a duct bank takes every circuit in it. Storm damage takes aerial plant down in miles, not feet, and becomes a rebuild with restoration priorities. We field both, and our construction bench means the same company that splices the emergency can re-bore a destroyed crossing or re-hang a storm-damaged route without a second procurement.
Before the bad day: hardening and readiness
The cheapest restoration is the one the network design prevented: physically diverse routes, slack loops at structures, current as-builts, and marked plant. We build those features into new construction and can audit existing plant for them — the same diversity logic data-center buyers demand in dark-fiber routes.
