A fiber crew's daily production ranges from a few hundred feet of hard-rock boring to well over a mile of open-country plowing. What actually sets a project's calendar is rarely the digging — it's permits, pole make-ready, utility locates, weather windows, and splicing, the steps that happen before and after the machines move.
Typical production, honestly stated
Rules of thumb crews actually use: plowing open ground, 5,000–10,000 ft/day; trenching, 1,000–3,000 ft/day; directional boring in soft ground, 300–1,000 ft/day — and in rock, sometimes 100. Aerial lashing where poles are ready, 3,000–10,000 ft/day. Every number halves in congested streets and doubles across empty range. A residential neighborhood passes in days; the drops, splicing, and testing that light it up take weeks more.
The schedule-setters nobody sees
Locates: every dig waits on 811 marks (two working days in most states, and tickets expire). Permits: highway ROW and railroad crossings run weeks to months — railroads are the classic critical path. Make-ready: aerial builds wait while pole owners move existing attachments. Season: northern states compress underground work into a May–October window; the South builds year-round. A competent contractor sequences all four in parallel — which is most of what project management means in this trade.
From construction to lit service
After mainline construction: splicing enclosures are built out, every strand is shot with an OTDR, the network is tested end-to-end, then drops are built as customers order. From first shovel to first customer on a town-scale build commonly runs several months — and on grant-funded projects, milestone reporting tracks it the whole way.
