Underground fiber goes in four main ways: open trenching, vibratory plowing, horizontal directional drilling, and micro-trenching. Which one a crew uses depends on the ground, what's already buried, and what the surface looks like — a farm field, a city street, and a finished subdivision each get a different method.
The four methods
Trenching cuts an open slot, places conduit, and backfills — simple and visible, used where the ground is open. Plowing pulls a vibrating blade that slices the soil and feeds conduit into the cut in one pass — the fastest method across open country, often a mile or more a day. Directional boring (HDD) steers a drill head underground between two pits, passing beneath roads, driveways, and rivers without disturbing the surface — its own article. Micro-trenching saws a one-inch slot in pavement for shallow city installs.
How deep, and what's actually buried
Typical depths run 18–48 inches depending on state rules, road crossings, and frost; highway right-of-way often requires more (TxDOT commonly wants 42 inches). Crews usually bury conduit — orange or colored duct — and later pull or jet the fiber cable through it, so future cables need no new digging. A tracer wire or marker tape goes in too, so locators can find it, and warning posts mark long rural runs.
What happens before and after the dig
Before: the one-call system. Crews file a locate ticket (dial 811) and utilities mark their buried lines in paint and flags — digging without it is illegal in every state. After: restoration — backfill compacted, sod or seed replaced, pavement patched. On a well-run job the only permanent evidence is a small flush-mounted vault or pedestal every few hundred feet.
