The honest headline: for nearly every home, fiber is faster than anything else on the market, and the glass itself is nowhere near its limit.
What a gigabit actually feels like
A 1 Gbps connection downloads a two-hour HD movie in under a minute and a modern video game in minutes instead of hours. But day-to-day, the differences people feel are elsewhere: video calls that never stutter (symmetrical upload), cloud backups that finish overnight, and a house of simultaneous streamers that never fight for capacity.

Latency — the round-trip delay — runs 2–10 ms on fiber versus 15–30 on cable and more on wireless. That's the difference between a video call that feels in-person and one where people talk over each other.

Cable neighborhoods share limited capacity, so evenings sag. Fiber's passive optical networks share too, but with so much headroom that congestion is rarely perceptible. And the ceiling keeps moving: the same strand serving 1 Gbps today can serve 10, 25, or 100 Gbps later just by upgrading the electronics at each end — laboratory records on a single fiber run to petabits. The construction is the expensive part; the speed is nearly free afterward. That's why builders bury conduit once and plan on decades.
