Safety and PPE on Fiber Crews

Fiber construction shares its hazards with all heavy civil work — traffic, trenches, buried utilities, overhead power — plus a few of its own, like laser light and glass shards. The controls are unglamorous and absolute: locate before you dig, protect every trench, control traffic, and wear the PPE, every day.

The standard kit

On any compliant crew: hard hat, ANSI Class 2/3 high-visibility apparel (Class 3 for night and highway work), safety glasses, steel- or composite-toe boots, and cut-resistant gloves. Task-specific additions: hearing protection around plows and rock hammers, dielectric gear near energized lines, respirators for silica-producing concrete cuts, and fall protection in bucket work. Splicers add two of their own: eye protection against invisible infrared laser light — never look into an unverified fiber — and disciplined shard handling, because cleaved glass slivers are needle-sharp.

The big four killers, and their controls

OSHA's construction “focus four” — struck-by, caught-in/between, falls, electrocution — map directly onto fiber work. Struck-by: work-zone traffic control built to the MUTCD, spotters, and hi-vis. Caught-in: trench protection — any excavation 5 feet or deeper gets sloping, shoring, or a trench box under OSHA's excavation standard, no exceptions. Electrocution: assume every line is live; respect minimum approach distances aloft. And underlying everything underground: the 811 locate, because the deadliest thing on the site is the gas line nobody marked.

Culture is the real PPE

Equipment doesn't make a crew safe; habits do — daily tailgate briefings, job hazard analyses, stop-work authority for every worker, and near-miss reporting that gets read. Buyers can see the difference in a contractor's EMR and OSHA logs; workers can see it in whether the trench box is actually in the trench.
